Survivorman vs. Man vs. Wild

I know this battle lurks out there. Each time the topic comes up among friends, it’s usually the same response. Survivorman kicks ass over Man Vs. Wild. I chose to put a short entry about it here, because I watched an episode (Zambia, SA) of MvW last night and I was totally UNimpressed.

Bear Grylls, pulls an aluminum can from his sack, makes a small stove with it, then half cooks 3 worms over the heat and eats them. Aside from the aluminum magically appearing (I’ll admit, I didnt’ watch the beginning, where these guys usually showoff their collection of random sh-tuff for their “survival”, so he may have had it legitmately)…that’s not what I take issue with.

Bear, after his lunch developes diahrea, which he also very clearly tells is VERY VERY bad in a survival situation. Water, minerals, nutrients are lost and considering the stage for his scenario, Zambian jungle/sahara, the heat (dehydration) and the wildlife (the odor would attract predators), this was quite dangerous.

My issue…in this vulnerable state, Bear choses to scale the 100 or so foot cliff, that clearly added way too much risk to survival. It was obvious prior and he even mentioned he could have gone around. During his climb he crapped himself and was feeling quite ill. This is not a state to be in while scaling something that high.

ANYWAY - I feel that Les Stroud from Survivorman has much more respect for the wild and does a far better job of portraying REAL survival scenarios with a necessary humble attitude. The wild doesn’t give a crap if you can scale a 100′ cliff while crapping your pants and trying not to puke. Neither do we. We’d rather learn something valuable than watch a guy who is full of himself show off for the camera crew (and us, ultimately)…bleh.

Go Les Stroud! Boo Bear Grylls.
