Eco-living or eco-hobby

recycledfishdecal.jpgRachael “forced” me out today. She had a place in mind but didn’t want to tell me. I don’t like surprises or not knowing, so I bugged her until she told me where she planned to take me. We ended up at Dick’s Sporting Goods, where they were holding a large sale event in the parking lot. I had my doubts, but it turned out to be pretty cool and embarrassingly successful at making us spend our money. Interestingly enough, I had nearly the whole way there been sort of stunned at $4.00 plus per gallon of gas. Unreal.

We watched a demonstration of Craw-dad lures in a big tank of bass, watched people try out the kayaks in big shallow pool and visited a tent where a guy named “Finn” wanted to talk about “recycled fish” – huh? On the surface, it sounds like a plea to promote “Catch and Release”, but I was thrown when Finn handed me a coupon for a water saving shower head. Ecology touches every aspect of our lives, whether we’re laying on the couch cramming food in our faces or out on the water paddling or fishing or camping in the wilderness.

Have a look at the Recycled Fish website – whether you fish or not (though it will be more applicable and interesting if you do).

Cheers!

Mallard Lake Paddle

In preparation for our Hoosier National Forest paddling/camping trip, Mike wanted to load down his kayak with all of his gear to get a feel for how it would perform. I have been on a couple of multi-day trip, so I had a pretty good handle on how much crap I load my boat up with without tipping over. I know I won’t be taking a few items that I don’t really have in my possession in Illinois. That will reduce the weight down some or simply free up more space for additional water. I was just along on this trip to paddlepaintedturtle.jpg and fish with a new rod and reel purchased “for Rachael”, in case she ever wanted to fish.

The day started out pretty gloomy looking, cold and a bit windy. The forecast had told us it would clear up. I think we stalled a little bit getting our boats into the water, thinking, “It’s going to clear up – any minute now!” We chatted with a young man who was also kayak fishing. He said it was the only way to fish this lake. We understood what he meant later. We finally got our gear loaded up and hauled our boats, one person in front, one in back, a kayak handle in either hand. The walk from the parking lot, across the grass and down a small hill was a short one. It appeared as though putting in on a semi-steep shore might be tricky, but we were in the water in moments. Mother nature had the last laugh with the weather – shortly after putting in the sun began to shine.

Saving the Verde River

I haven’t lived in the southwest for nearly 15 years. When I had lived in Southern California, the drought conditions were not nearly as bad as they are now. Rachael and I learned quite a lot about the struggle the southwest is having with water when we spent our first winter in Prescott, AZ this past December through March.

Verde River from the AirPrescott, Prescott Valley and Chino Valley are all clamoring to round up the scarce water commodity to sustain the increasing growth in the area. Unfortunately, the area doesn’t have the water to provide. Since learning of the localized issue of central Arizona and the plight of the Verde River, other similar stories have cropped up and caught the media’s attention. Las Vegas is suing over water rights to another small northwest Arizona town. It’s amazing how much we, in the Midwest, take our abundant water for granted.

Midwest (Indiana) Multiday Kayak/Camping

I’m getting stoked about our Memorial weekend kayak/camping trip with Mike & Caryn down to Hoosier National Forest. I spent the day calling the various agencies – and there are at least THREE that have jurisdiction for that whole area. Army Corps of Engineers, Indiana Department of Natural Resources or US Forest Service need to be checked with unless you’re more fortunate than me and know already where you’ll be putting in and camping. Everyone I called was extremely friendly and hopeful, though.

I gave Blackwell a second chance.

I wanted to go fishing again and try my luck at some Rainbow Trout. Saturday turned out to be a nice day. I finished my yardwork, which was satisfying, and decided if I wanted to fish for rainbow’s, I had only a few choices. Blackwell Forest Preserve/Silver Lake and two other lakes in Dupage County are stocked with rainbow. Blackwell is close by, so I decided to give it another shot
